The Hunting Territory

The area currently comprising the La Mandria Park used to be called “Vauda”, to indicate a sort of strip of boundary between the flatland and the lowland forest, which once occupied enormous areas throughout Europe. After the transferral of the state capital from Chambery to Turin in 1563, the Dukes of Savoy, in particular Carlo Emanuele II and Vittorio Amedeo II, identified the area of Venaria as home to one of their recreational residences, which was ideal for hunting, considering the characteristics of the territory: thick vegetation populated by lots of animal species.
